The final of the Vienna Open scheduled on Sunday is not just a battle for a prestigious ATP 500 title; it is one of tennis’ most compelling matchups behind Alcaraz-Sinner, featuring top seed Jannik Sinner and second seed Alexander Zverev.
This showdown is a straight-sets rematch of their 2025 Australian Open final, and it promises to be a good test for both of them. For Sinner, it’s a test because he is in a pure dictator mode since the beginning of the tournament. For Zverev, it’s a test because he has beaten only three Top 10 players this season, including Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals (6-4, 7-5).
The 2025 final in Melbourne saw Jannik Sinner defeat Alexander Zverev in straight sets (6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3) to claim his second consecutive Australian Open crown. Sinner’s performance that day was characterized by ruthless efficiency and an impenetrable serve, preventing Zverev from creating a single break point opportunity across the three sets.
Opportunity for Zverev
That dominant defeat still looms large for the German. For Zverev, this match represents a crucial opportunity to overturn the memory of Melbourne and secure his second Vienna title. “It’s going to be a great challenge,” Zverev stated, acknowledging the task ahead. “I am looking forward to it, playing one of the two best players in the world, seeing where my level really is.”
Sinner, meanwhile, understands the challenge of facing a highly motivated opponent on an indoor hard court, a surface Zverev thrives on. “Alexander is a champion here and he’s playing great tennis,” Sinner noted. “The Australian Open was a great memory, but every match is new. I expect him to come out firing, especially after what happened last time. I just have to trust my process.”
The raw stats confirm the razor-thin margin between these two top-ranked players. Their head-to-head (H2H) record currently stands narrowly in favor of Zverev at 4-3. However, the German couldn’t prevail in their two latest matches. Furthermore, the German was the last one to defeat Sinner in a Grand Slam (US Open 2023), before Sinner entered his current dominant run.
Sinner in the dictator mode
Zverev comes into this final having achieved a significant career milestone in his semi-final victory over Lorenzo Musetti. That win was his 300th hard-court tour-level victory, making him just the eighth active player to reach that mark. The win also sends him to his 40th Tour-level final (having already secured 24 trophies).
Sinner secured his spot in the final on Saturday with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Alex de Minaur, 6-3, 6-4. Despite a blistering start that saw the Italian race to a 4-0 lead in the first set, De Minaur became the first player to break Sinner’s serve in the entire tournament, converting a break point after Sinner’s serve had held firm through three previous matches.
However, Sinner quickly regained control, securing the win in just under 90 minutes. This victory not only extended his perfect career record against the Australian to 12-0 but also marked his 20th consecutive win on indoor hard courts, highlighting his relentless baseline aggression and flawless transition game on this specific surface. The win was also his 50th career victory over a top-10 opponent, setting the stage for a highly-anticipated clash with Zverev.
