Australian Open: Kotov beats Rinderknech in five sets to score first Grand Slam main draw win

Pavel Kotov won against Arthur Rinderknech 7-5, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-3 on Sunday and will face the winner of the match between Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 18 seed, in the next round

Russian Pavel Kotov reached the second round of the Australian Open by winning against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in five sets.

Kotov, ranked No 64 in the world, won 7-5, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-3 in four hours and 42 minutes at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

This was the 25-year-old’s first victory in a Grand Slam main draw – he had lost in the opening round the four previous times he played in the main draw at a major.

The Russian, ranked No 64, will play the winner of the match between Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli and Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 18 seed, next.
