Daniil Medvedev survived a huge scare against Emil Ruusuvuori, fighting back from two sets down to eventually win out 3-6, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0 and reach the third round of the Australian Open.

In a match that ended past 03:30 in the morning local time, Medvedev was forced to dig deep into the reserves to find the motivation and tennis to defeat a very tricky opponent from two sets down.

In the end, and as he has done so many times before in his career, the Russian was able to grind out rallies long enough to wear down his opponent. By the end of a titanic tussle, there was nothing left in the tank for the talented Finn, who also required shoulder treatment towards the end of the match.

Medvedev, ranked No 3, will play Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 27 seed, next.

The Russian benefited from the abandonment of French qualifier Terence Atmane (5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round, Ruusuvuori, ranked No 53, edged out American wildcard Patrick Kypson (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4)).
