Jannik Sinner, the 24-year-old second seed, maintained his ruthless start to the 2026 season with a dominant performance against world No. 88 James Duckworth. The world number two fired 18 aces to secure the win in Melbourne, marking his 17th consecutive victory at the tour level and his 16th consecutive win at the Australian Open. Sinner has yet to drop a set this week and has conceded only 10 games in total across his first two matches.

The Italian entered the second round having benefited from the retirement of France’s Hugo Gaston in the previous stage, a match Sinner led 6-2, 6-1 before the Frenchman abandoned play. Conversely, James Duckworth, 34, arrived at the contest following a taxing five-set battle in the first round where he defeated Croat Dino Prizmic 7-6(4), 3-6, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

27 consecutives sets won!

Despite the intensity of his game, Sinner showcased a playful side during his on-court interview when the topic turned to the technical variety of the modern tour. When asked who has the best drop shot on tour, the Italian engaged the crowd. “I think we all know who has the best drop shot, no?”, Sinner said. After being pressed for a specific name, he giggled and added, “it’s Carlos of course”.

Sinner will next face American world number 85 Eliot Spizzirri, who is also 24 years old. The two-time defending champion’s current form, which includes a streak of 27 consecutive sets won, makes him the heavy favorite as the draw progresses toward the second week.
