Roland-Garros: Anisimova advances to fourth round as injured Muchova retires in third set
Amanda Anisimova benefited from the retirement of Karolina Muchova and will play either Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 14 seed, or Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 17 seed, in the fourth roun
Muchova, who was playing only her fourth tournament since last year’s US Open, started by winning the first set 7-6 (9-7) in a close tiebreak, raising hopes of another upset after she had knocked out fourth seed Maria Sakkari in the previous round.
However, with the score tied at 2-2 in the second set, Muchova took a fall while running for a shot and needed a medical time out.
Muchova unable to continue
Clearly hampered by the injury as the match resumed, Muchova was unable to match Anisimova. The Czech did not win another game after the fall, as Anisimova who won the second set 6-2, and then led 3-0 in the third set.
Fighting back tears, Muchova decided that she was no longer able to continue and retired from the match, sending Anisimova into the fourth round for the second time in four years (she was a semi-finalist in 2019).
The 20-year-old American will play play either Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 14 seed, or Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 17 seed, in the last 16.
