Roland-Garros: Svitolina follows Monfils’ epic victory with second round win of her own

The Ukrainian will play the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, and Russian Anna Blinkova in the next round

Less than 14 hours after husband Gael Monfils won an epic first round clash in the men’s singles draw, Elina Svitolina moved into the third round of the women’s singles draw at Roland-Garros.

The former world No 3 defeated Australian qualifier Storm Hunter 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in Paris on Wednesday.

Svitolina, ranked No 192 in the world, won her first title as a mom over the weekend and extended her wining streak to six matches with today’s win, where she was cheered by Monfils as well.

This is the eighth time in a row that Svitolina has reached atleast the third round at Roland-Garros; her best performance has been a quarter-final finish in 2015, 2017 and 2020.

The Ukrainian defeated Italian Martina Trevisan, the No 26 seed (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round. She will play the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, and Russian Anna Blinkova next.

In the first round of the French Open, Hunter, ranked No 204, edged out Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz (4-6, 6-2, 6-4).
