US Open: Two-time champion Osaka goes down to Collins in first round

Two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka has been knocked out of the 2022 edition in the first round by American Danielle Collins in straight sets.

Collins, seeded No 19 and a runner-up at the Australian Open earlier this year, played the key moments better during the one-hour 35 minutes contest which she won 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the night session match.

Osaka had her chances, going up 3-0 in the first set and also breaking to lead 2-1 in the second but Collins fought back each time, saving six of eight break points on her serve.

Osaka loses in first round of the US Open for the first time in her career

For Osaka, the loss marks the first time she has failed to win a round at the US Open in seven main draw appearances. Osaka also ends the US summer series with a four-match losing streak and has won only two matches ins ix events since reaching the Miami final in March.

This is only the third time in seven appearances that Collins has reached the second round at her home Slam where her best performance has been a third round finish in 2021. She is through to face Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa for a spot in the third round.
