Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic, the No. 21 seed, advanced to the third round of the US Open on Wednesday after a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca. The match, which lasted one hour and 58 minutes, concluded with a final score of 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-3 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The opening set was a tightly contested affair, with both players holding serve to force a tiebreak. Machac, however, showcased his composure and experience to secure the crucial first set. Following the intense tiebreak, the 22-year-old Czech took full control of the match. His aggressive and precise ball-striking proved too much for his younger opponent, as Machac went on to claim the next two sets with relative ease.

Machac’s statistical dominance underscored his control of the contest. He hit an impressive 30 total winners and only committed 24 unforced errors. His serving was particularly effective, winning 80% of his first-serve points from 55 attempts and 66% on his second serve. He also capitalized on key moments, converting on three of his break point opportunities, while Fonseca was unable to secure a single one against the resolute Czech.

Machac – Mensik next ?

For Fonseca, this match marks the end of his first full season on the Grand Slam circuit. The 18-year-old Brazilian prodigy, ranked No. 45 in the world, demonstrated his tenacity by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets, winning two tight tiebreaks. Despite his defeat to Machac, Fonseca’s performance in New York, and his season overall, has signaled his arrival as a serious contender for future majors. He hit 21 total winners against Machac but was hindered by 31 unforced errors.

Machac, currently ranked No. 22, continues his campaign at Flushing Meadows with a third-round match against the winner of the contest between his compatriot, No. 16 seed Jakub Mensik, and French qualifier Ugo Blanchet. Having not dropped a set so far in the tournament, after also winning his first-round match against Italian Luca Nardi (6-3, 6-1, 6-1), Machac is back to his top form after a four-month hiatus.
