Qualifier Jakub Mensik beat French qualifier Titouan Droguet 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (1), 6-3 to reach the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Wednesday night.

After winning the biggest match of his life on Monday – his first ATP Tour level event, and first Grand Slam match – over Gregoire Barrere, 17-year-old Mensik has backed up the achievement by coming back from a set down to defeat fellow qualifier Droguet. In doing so, the teen becomes the youngest player to make the US Open third round since 1990.

Mensik was again strong behind his serve, only giving Droguet a look at three break points across the two hour, 51 minute match.

The teen, ranked No 206, will play the winner of the match between Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas and American Taylor Fritz, the No 9 seed, next.

In the previous round of the US Open, Droguet, ranked No 171, won against Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 18 seed (6-3, 0-6, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2).
