Ninth seed Garbine Muguruza, the No 9 seed, ended the run of Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova 6-0, 6-4 as she advanced to the third round of the US Open in New York on Thursday.

The two-time major champion dominated the first set, allowing the Czech just five points but the 17-year-old hit back in the second set and led 4-1, 0-40 on the Spaniard’s serve.

“I would say (it was) a relief of closing the match, because I was almost 5-1 down and came back and stayed tough there,” she said. “So I was happy that I didn’t had to play a tiebreak or a third set, so it was a relief at that moment. But also to get another win here in a nice stadium. It’s been a while.”

But Muguruza rediscovered her form just in time and reeled off five straight games to take the match. Muguruza, ranked No 10, will play Czech Petra Kvitova, the No 21 seed, next.

“I think we are both playing good tennis,” Muguruza said. “She just played a final a week ago, and it’s going to be a challenge. I think that she has beaten me the last few times we played, and here four years ago. But it’s going to be a good challenge for me in the third round.”

Fruhvirtova, ranked No 167, defeated Chinese Xinyu Wang (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round at Flushing Meadows for her first main-draw win.

In the previous round, Muguruza beat Dane Clara Tauson (6-3, 7-6 (5)).
