US Open: Raducanu finds form in straight-sets win, advances to third round

Emma Raducanu delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday at the US Open, securing a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory over Janice Tjen to advance to the third round. The win marks a significant step forward for the 2021 champion, as she continues to build momentum at the tournament where she made history.

From the opening game, the British star, ranked No. 36, seized control of the match and never relinquished it. She broke Tjen’s serve early in the first set, setting the tone for a contest defined by her aggressive and precise shot-making.

While Tjen showed flashes of resilience, Raducanu consistently overwhelmed her with powerful groundstrokes from the baseline, forcing errors and dictating play. She closed out the first set with a forehand winner, putting her in prime position to finish the match quickly.

The second set was a near-perfect display of efficiency. Raducanu’s serving game was particularly impressive; she did not commit a single double fault throughout the match and delivered eight aces, keeping Tjen on the back foot. She won an overwhelming 76% of her first serve points, allowing her to stay in charge of the rallies. The high success rate on her first serve – a remarkable 79% for the match – underscored her ability to consistently put pressure on her opponent.

Beyond her serving, Raducanu’s statistics paint a picture of total dominance. She tallied 16 winners to Tjen’s significantly lower count.

Raducanu will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 9 seed, and Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova next.
