Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 9 seed, beat No 7 seed Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday.

Rublev, ranked No 11, will face the winner of the match between American Frances Tiafoe, the No 22 seed, and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the second seed, next.

Rublev hit 11 aces (30 winners) and broke four times, losing serve only once.

“I think today was everything going my side,” admitted Rublev afterwards. “Like when I need to play, like to make a good serve I was making good serve. Every time when I need him to miss he was missing.

“So everything was like today on my side. On top of that, I was playing good. I don’t know. I was making good shots, good winners. Yeah, and in the end I was able to win in three sets so I’m really happy.”

Norrie – All credit to Andrey

“It felt like Andrey gave me really nothing, and he was very solid,” agreed Norrie. “All credit to him. I felt maybe the one time I did have a chance was when I ended up throwing my racquet, and I ended up getting a bit more energy and moving a lot better for the next kind of 20 minutes. That was probably the best part of the match for me.”

It is the third time Rublev has reached the last eight of the tournament. He has now won four of his six matches at the US Open against opponents ranked in the Top 10; at the other Slams, he has lost all five matches against Top 10-ranked opponents.

The Russian won against Serb Laslo Djere (7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4), SoonWoo Kwon (6-3, 6-0, 6-4) and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 19 seed (6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (7)) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of Flushing Meadows, Norrie, ranked No 9, defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire (6-0, 7-6 (1), 6-0), Portuguese João Sousa (6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4)) and Dane Holger Rune, the No 28 seed (7-5, 6-4, 6-1).
