US Open: Wawrinka battles past Etcheverry to become oldest to reach third round since 1991

Swiss Stan Wawrinka won against Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 30 seed, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Wawrinka, ranked No 49, will face No 6 seed Jannik Sinner next. The 38-year-old Swiss is now the oldest player to reach the men’s third round since Jimmy Connors’ run to the smei-finals in 1991.

In the previous round of the Flushing Meadows tournament, the 38-year-old Swiss defeated Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-4).

Etcheverry, ranked No 34, won against Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen (6-3, 6-7 (3), 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of the Flushing Meadows tournament.
