World No 5 Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships after Jordan Thompson retired in their fourth-round clash on Sunday.

Fritz led the proceedings 6-1, 3-0 when Thompson decided to discontinue due to a right thigh injury.

Fritz cruised through the opening set with two breaks of serve as Thompson failed to find any rhythm. He broke the Aussie twice again in the second set before his opponent walked to the net to shake hands during the fourth game.

With the win, Fritz matched his previous year’s performance at the Championships. He also became the first American to make back-to-back quarter-finals at the grass-court Major after Sam Querrey in 2016-17. In total, it’s his third time in the last eight here.

“It’s just extra special because it’s so prestigious,” the American said on court. “Wimbledon has the historic feel that no other tournament has. It’s just a different feeling being here as opposed to the other Slams. It’s always a really special time of the year and I remember when the first time I came here, as a junior, it just felt like a dream to be at Wimbledon playing the event.”

Fritz will next face No 17 seed Karen Khachanov for a spot in the semi-finals.

The two have come face-to-face twice, with Khachanov leading the head-to-head 2-0. Though, they last faced each other at the ATP Cup in 2020.
