Shelton beats Sonego for third consecutive Grand Slam to reach quarter-finals
Ben Shelton edged out Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 7-5 on Monday and will play the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 19 seed, in the next round

American Ben Shelton, the No 10 seed, edged out Italian Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 7-5 to move into the last eight of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Monday.
Shelton, at 22 years and 264 days, is the youngest American player to reach the quarterfinals of the men’s singles at Wimbledon since Andy Roddick in 2004.
This year’s tournament will be the American’s third Grand Slam quarter-final, having also reached the semi-final stage at the US Open in 2023 and the Australian Open earlier this year.
“Every time I need a big point, he comes up with a highlight shot, and maybe the same, vice versa,” Shelton joked during this post-match interview.
“I’m happy with the way that I played that last game. I feel like that was my best tennis, my best returning, and that’s what I’m going to need to continue in this tournament.”
Shelton, ranked No 10, will face the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 19 seed, next.
The 22-year-old American beat Hungarian lucky loser Marton Fucsovics (6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2), Australian Rinky Hijikata (6-2, 7-5, 6-4) and Australian qualifier Alex Bolt (6-4, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4)) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Sonego, ranked No 47, won against American Brandon Nakashima, the No 29 seed (6-7 (5), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (3)), Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4)) and Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria (6-3, 6-4, 6-2).
