Zheng Qinwen defeats Sloane Stephens on her Wimbledon debut

Chinese Qinwen Zheng reached the second round of Wimbledon by defeating American Sloane Stephens 7-6 (1), 7-5 in the fading light on Court 15 on Tuesday evening in London.

The Chinese teenager was making her Wimbledon debut against the 2013 quarter-finalist and former world No 3.

Zheng, ranked No 52, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, the No 9 seed, and Belgian Greet Minnen next.

She hit 22 winners against 31 unforced errors and won 44 of 77 baseline points against the American.

Stephens led 5-3 in the second set and it appeared that the American could close the set and which time the match would have likely been held over for darkness. But Zheng flipped the script and stormed through the final four games to notch the win.
