McCartney Kessler, the No 5 seed, edged out Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to reach the last eight of the Austin Open at the Westwood Country Club on Thursday evening
Kessler, ranked No 56, will play Romanian Sorana Cirstea next.
The American previously defeated Swiss lucky loser Viktorija Golubic (6-2, 7-5).
In the previous round of the Austin tournament, Bucsa — ranked No 99 — defeated American Bernarda Pera (6-3, 6-4).
