Swiatek off to a winning start on grass in Bad Homburg
Iga Swiatek won the first match of her grass-court season this Tuesday in Bad Homburg.

Iga Swiatek claimed victory in her opening match at Bad Homburg, marking the start of her grass-court season. The Polish player defeated Belarusian qualifier Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
In her first grass-court match since her third-round loss at Wimbledon 2024 to Yulia Putintseva, Iga Swiatek got off to a shaky start, falling behind 4-1 against two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka.
Struggling with inconsistency on her forehand side, the Polish player relied on her backhand to regain confidence and quickly turned things around, winning five straight games to take the opening set on the German grass.
Sakkari or Alexandrova next
In the second set, Swiatek continued to trouble the Belarusian and broke early to go up 2-1. However, she immediately lost that advantage as Azarenka responded with aggressive returns to break back.
The world No. 8 kept her composure and managed to pull ahead for good in the seventh game. Facing pressure one last time as she served for the match at 5-4, Swiatek trailed 15-30, but held firm and closed it out on her first match point.
In the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg tournament, Iga Swiatek will face the winner of the upcoming match between Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova and Greece’s Maria Sakkari.
