Birmingham Classic: Venus Williams wins second match since Wimbledon 2021

American wildcard Venus Williams edged out Italian Camila Giorgi 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (6) to move into the last 16 of the Birmingham Classic at Edgbaston Priory Club on Monday evening.

The match lasted three hours and 16 minutes – and it is Williams’s second win since Wimbledon 2021, following her win over Katie Volynets at the ASB Classic in January, plus her first over a player ranked in the top 50 since 2019.

Venus Williams will play the winner of the match between Czech Linda Noskova and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the second seed, next.
