Australian Kimberly Birrell, the No 4 seed, defeated Canadian Bianca Andreescu 6-2, 6-2 to reach the last 16 of the Catalonia Open on Monday afternoon.
Birrell, ranked No 61, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Xiyu Wang and Hungarian Dalma Galfi next.
