Spaniard Carlota Martinez Cirez reached the last 8 of the Catalonia Open by winning against Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday night.
Martinez Cirez, ranked No 244, will face the winner of the match between Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the top seed, and Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich next.
In the previous round, the Spaniard beat Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, the No 7 seed (6-4, 7-6 (2)).
Cocciaretto, ranked No 87, won against German Jule Niemeier (2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3) in the 32.
