Former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin beat wildcard Katie Volynets 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open on Wednesday.
The American, who needed a wildcard to enter the main draw, is through to her first quarter-final on the WTA Tour since January when she reached the semis in Hobart.
Kenin, ranked No 93 in the world, will Russian Anastasia Potapova next.
In the previous round, the American won against Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-4).
Volynets, ranked No 117, defeated qualifier Clervie Ngounoue (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) in the previous round.
