Colombian Emiliana Arango edged out American Taylor Townsend 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 to move into the last 8 of the Guadalajara Open Akron on Wednesday evening.
The 22-year-old moved into her first WTA 1000 quarter-final by getting through the first and third sets from a break down.
Arango, ranked No 180, will face Greek Maria Sakkari, the second seed, next. The Colombian notched her first two career top-50 wins in the first and second rounds at Guadalajara – over No.26-ranked Potapova and No 38-ranked Stephens, both in straight sets.
The 22-year-old Colombian won against Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 11 seed (6-4, 6-3) and American Sloane Stephens (6-1, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Townsend, ranked No 101, beat Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic (7-6 (3), 6-4) and lucky loser Elvina Kalieva (6-1, 7-6 (3)).
