Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens continued her winning streak in Guadalajara as she upset 10th seed Belinda Bencic in straight sets to reach the round of 16 at the Guadalajara Open on Wednesday.

Stephens, currently ranked No 50 in the world, won the WTA 250 event in Guadalajara earlier this year and scored her seventh victory in a row in the city as she took out Bencic 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 29 minutes.

“Guadalajara suits my game well, and I’ve been playing some good tennis here” – Sloane Stephens

This was the second win in a row for Sloane Stephens this week after having beaten Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. It also marked the first time that she has won back-to-back matches at a tournament since Roland-Garros in June and her first top 20 win of the season.

“Obviously, Guadalajara suits my game well, and I’ve been playing some good tennis here,” Stephens said as quoted by the WTA Tour. “I probably have the most wins on the tour in Guadalajara this season. So it’s been nice for me. Obviously, I’ve had some good results and some good memories, so just looking forward to getting out there tomorrow.”

The win improved her record against Bencic to 2-0. With the loss, Bencic is out of contention for the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, where three spots are still up for grabs depending on how results this week pan out.
