Spain’s Andrea Lazaro Garcia delivered a clinical performance on Saturday evening, defeating local favorite Fiona Ferro 6-2, 6-2 to secure her place in the final of the Open Arena Les Sables d’Olonne.
The world No 206 was in imperious form at this WTA 125 event, needing just over an hour to dismantle the Frenchwoman. Lazaro Garcia’s aggressive baseline play and consistency left Ferro, currently ranked No 240, without answers in front of her home crowd.
The Spaniard’s run to the championship match has been characterized by its efficiency; prior to today, she notched impressive victories over Diana Martynov and Manon Leonard, but her defining moment came with a straight-sets upset of the seventh seed, Lucia Bronzetti.
Ferro, a former world No 39, had looked resurgent earlier in the week with notable wins over Sofia Costoulas and Lucrezia Stefanini, but she struggled to maintain that intensity against the steady Spaniard.
Lazaro Garcia now moves into Sunday’s final where she will face the eighth seed, Dominika Salkova. The Czech reached the final by overcoming Alina Korneeva in the other semifinal. With both players showcasing exceptional hard-court form this week, the Vendée trophy is very much up for grabs.
