Madrid Open: Kostyuk comes through tough Raducanu test to make third round

Marta Kostyuk, the No 24 seed, came through a tough encounter with Emma Raducanu, beating the Briton 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to move into the third round of the Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica.

The Ukrainian was on the losing end of a dominant showing from Raducanu the last time the two met, which was at this same tournament three years ago.

But Kostyuk is a much more developed player now than she was back in 2022, and she put in a thoroughly impressive performance to battle her way past a resolute and tenacious Raducanu who put in an excellent performance herself.

A tight first set went the way of the Ukrainian, before the Briton regrouped well to storm to a one-sided second. A topsy-turvy decided eventually wen the way of Kostyuk, who stayed sharper in those closing stages to outbreak Raducanu, despite having won one point fewer than her opponent across the whole match.

Kostyuk, ranked No 36, will play Russian Veronika Kudermetova next.

Raducanu, ranked No 49, beat Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens (7-6 (4), 6-4) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
