Russian Mirra Andreeva beat No 7 seed Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the last 16 of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica.

This was a thoroughly impressive statement from the 16-year-old, beating the reigning Wimbledon champion and former French Open finalist to repeat her breakthrough run at this same tournament one year ago.

Andreeva becomes only the second player this century to defeat a top 10 opponent on clay before turning 17, after Nicole Vaidisova achieved the same feat in Charleston back in 2005 against Anastasia Myskina.

Andreeva, ranked No 43, will play the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 21 seed, and Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 12 seed, next.

In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, the 17-year-old Russian edged out American Taylor Townsend (4-6, 6-1, 7-5) and won against No 29 seed Linda Noskova (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).

Vondrousova, ranked No 7, won against American Shelby Rogers (6-1, 6-3) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
