Madrid Open: Begu advances to quarter-finals, takes out Samsonova

Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, the No 31 seed, won against Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 14 seed, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Monday.
Begu, ranked No 35, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 26 seed, and Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 9 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Romanian defeated Czech Karolina Muchova (6-4, 7-5) and American Shelby Rogers, the No 33 seed (7-5, 6-2).
Samsonova, ranked No 18, won against Belgian Maryna Zanevska (6-2, 6-3) and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 19 seed (6-2, 6-0) earlier in the tournament.
