Mertens brushes aside Cornet to win Monastir title

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 5 seed, defeated Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, the No 3 seed, 6-2, 6-0 to win the Monastir Open final at the Monastir Tennis Club on Sunday.
Mertens now extends her winning streak to five, with 26 victories so far this year.
Mertens, ranked No 42, beat Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (6-1, 6-1), Greek qualifier Despina Papamichail (5-7, 6-1, 6-2), Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) and American Claire Liu (6-4, 6-0) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Jasmin Open Tunisia, Cornet, ranked No 37, beat Brazilian Laura Pigossi (7-6 (3), 6-0), Harriet Dart (6-3, 6-4), Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (7-5, 7-6 (7)) and Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the second seed (6-4, 6-3).
