Monterrey Open: Mertens advances to semi-finals, Garcia next

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 4 seed, advanced to the last four of the Monterrey Open by beating Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 8 seed, 6-2, 6-2 at the Estadio GNP Seguros on Friday night.

Mertens, ranked No 42, will face Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the top seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the Belgian won against Russian Diana Shnaider (6-0, 6-4) and Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).

Cocciaretto, ranked No 49, won against Spanish lucky loser Marina Bassols Ribera (7-5, 6-2) and German Tatjana Maria (7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)).
