San Jose Open: Kasatkina beats Sabalenka, makes semi-finals

Daria Kasatkina continues her impressive week in San Jose by defeating Aryna Sabalenka 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 on Friday. Next up in the semi-finals is either Coco Gauff or Paula Badosa.

Both Aryna Sabalenka and Daria Kasatkina are eager to make up for lost time after being banned from Wimbledon. Sabalenka is Belarusian and Kasatkina is Russian, so they were unable to play at the All-England Club. But they are good to go for the season’s final major — the US Open, beginning August 29 — so they are fine-tuning their games for that event.

It’s Kasatkina who picked up some momentum on Friday afternoon, beating Sabalenka 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the San Jose Open at the San Jose State University Tennis Center.

The No 7 seed awaits either American Coco Gauff or Spain’s Paula Badosa in the semis.

Kasatkina, ranked No 12, preceded Friday’s result by beating Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 and American qualifier Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0. Sabalenka, ranked No 6, kicked off her week with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 defeat of American lucky loser Caroline Dolehide.

Here are the other quarter-final matchups at the San Jose WTA 50:

  • Shelby Rogers vs. Amanda Anisimova
  • Coco Gauff vs. Paula Badosa
  • Ons Jabeur vs. Veronika Kudermetova
