Pliskova tops Boulter, advances to second round in San Jose

Czech Karolina Pliskova, the No 8 seed, won against wildcard Katie Boulter 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to move into the second round of the San Jose Open at San Jose State University Tennis Center on Monday evening.

Pliskova, ranked No 15, will face Amanda Anisimova next.

Pliskova fired eight aces, but still ended up facing 13 break points in the match, five of which she saved. The Czech was broken three times in the opening set, but recovered in time to take the second set in a tiebreak.

Former world No 1 Pliskova converted all six break points she saw in across the second and third sets, and converted six of nine break points overall to improve to 9-11 on the season.
