Before Indian Wells, Swiatek had won almost $26 million, with Gauff winning almost $13 million.

What have they said about each other?

The two did come up against each other in juniors, both winning junior Grand Slams in 2018, with Gauff remembering in a 2022 press conference: “Obviously going on the tour, we spoke and, you know, she’s super nice. I think that’s something I really admire about her. I have known Iga – I don’t know her well-well, but I have known her since she was probably ranked lower, and now that she’s No 1, and I will say that, nothing has really changed other than her tennis. But behind the scenes, she’s as nice as I think you guys see in the press conferences. I think that’s really important and rare to see, so I definitely congratulate her on that aspect.”

Prior to their first Grand Slam final together in 2022, Swiatek said of Gauff: “I’m pretty happy that she’s doing well, because I think she’s also had huge amount of pressure in her life, and being always like the youngest one and the one that is supposed to be the future, it must have been tough.

“I’m happy that she’s doing well with that, because I’m sure that it took her a lot of energy to do it properly. But, you know, I can’t really judge, because I don’t know what’s going on there inside. You never know basically.

“So from what I see on court, she’s developing every year basically. And, yeah, when I see her, I tend to forget that she’s 18, you know. She’s playing really consistent. She has consistent results kind of. You can see her progressing, and I think that’s the most important thing.”

Before the 2022 WTA Finals, Swiatek talked about Gauff on and off the court, saying: “I feel off court that she’s really humble. I’m happy about that because I know that from a young age kind of all eyes were on her. I’m happy she’s coping with that well. That’s what I see, you know? She seems to have really good people around her, so, yeah.

“And on court I feel like sometimes I’ve been really dominating in matches against her. But for sure on Roland-Garros, you could see her level. This final was I think in second set it was really tight, right?

“She is really tall. She has a good reach. But she’s moving really, really well, and she’s kind of flexible. She has variety. She can go to the net. When I was her age, I didn’t know how to play volleys, so I’m pretty jealous. Yeah, she’s a great player, and you can see that on singles and doubles as well.”

After losing to her at the 2023 French Open, Gauff reflected on Swiatek’s dominance over her, saying: “You lose to someone seven times, you feel crappy. It’s not fun at all, but also, every time I play her, I’m not thinking about the previous record. I treat it as a new opportunity every single time, and I think that’s the best way to do it. If I go in believing that I lost the match before it already happens, then I’m never going to win. But obviously when it’s over, yeah, it does suck.”
