Tokyo Open: Zheng moves into semi-finals

Qinwen Zheng defeated Claire Liu 6-4, 7-5 on Friday and will play Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 4 seed, in the next round

Chinese Qinwen Zheng moved into the semi-finals of the Tokyo Open by winning against American Claire Liu 6-4, 7-5 at the Ariake Coliseum and Ariake Tennis Forest Park on Friday.

Zheng, ranked No 36, will face Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 4 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the 19-year-old Chinese defeated Japanese Misaki Doi (6-2, 6-4) and Spaniard Paula Badosa, the top seed (6-3, 6-2).

Liu, ranked No 84, won against No 7 seed Alison Riske-Amritraj (6-2, 6-3) and Belgian Elise Mertens (6-4, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament.
