WTA Toronto: Pliskova through to second round to face Pegula

Former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova won against Argentine Nadia Podoroska 6-4, 7-6 (10) to advance to the second round of the WTA National Bank Open in Toronto at the Aviva Centre on Tuesday.

This was the first career meeting between the two players.

Pliskova, ranked No 45, will face No 3 seed Jessica Pegula next. The American leads their head-to-head 4-1, with all of those meetings coming in 2021. Pegula won the first four, including three on hardcourts, before Pliskova won the last clash, also on hardcourts in Cincinnati.
