Janice Tjen moved one win away from defending her Chennai title on Saturday as the Indonesian top seed beat unseeded American Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-finals. The match at the WTA 250 Chennai Open lasted 1 hour 24 minutes.
She has yet to lose a match in Chennai, where she beat Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-3 in last year’s final. That title made her the first Indonesian to win a WTA singles title since Angelique Widjaja at Pattaya City in 2002.
Tjen eyes back-to-back Chennai titles
Tjen opened her week with a 6-1, 6-2 win over American wild card Katherine Hui, then beat Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei 7-6 (1), 6-1 in the last 16. Montgomery, 22, who won her first WTA title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch earlier this year, leaves Chennai as the first American to reach the semi-finals of the event.
