Carlos Alcaraz was visibly happy as he spoke to the media following his match against Alex de Minaur (7-6, 6-2) at the ATP Finals – marking the first time he has won his opening match in Turin.

“I was nervous at the beginning, so getting rid of that feeling helps a lot,” Alcaraz told the Spanish media. “Obviously, starting the tournament with a victory gives you confidence for the upcoming matches.”

It’s very positive both to show your rivals and for your own confidence.

“A first match is never easy, he had first said in English. After the match, I realized this was my first win in the round-robin on the first day (smiling). I’m really happy about that. Winning a match here means you really played well because the level is very high. It’s very positive both to show your rivals and for your own confidence.”

Alcaraz said he will “keep trying to improve the small things that weren’t done well” and emphasized his ambition in Turin. “This is a tournament I really want to do well in, yeah, trying to win it one day. That motivates me to come here and perform at a great level.”
