Perhaps no fanbase in the tennis is more passionate than the Chileans.

They will be rewarded with one of their own in the final of their home tournament.

Nicolas Jarry, who is the top-ranked Chilean on the ATP Tour, overcame Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 in the semifinals of the Movistar Open at the Club Universidad Católica de San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago on Saturday night. Jarry advanced after two hours and 36 minutes, recovering from a stretch in the early stages of the match in which he lost eight consecutive games.

The world No 87 will battle Tomas Martin Etcheverry for the title on Sunday.

“It’s amazing,” Jarry assured. “I remember when I was a kid watching this same tournament in Vina Del Mar. I used to see Fernando, Nico, and Marcelo in this tournament, and I’m here in the final.”

Earlier in the tournament, Jarry beat Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas (7-6(1), 6-4), Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, the No 4 seed (6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2)) and German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Munar, ranked No 66, earned his place in the semis by ousting Chilean wildcard Alejandro Tabilo (6-0, 6-7(4), 7-6(5)), top-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti (6-4, 6-4), and Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
