World No. 7 Holger Rune has announced on Wednesday that he will retain Patrick Mouratoglou as his head coach, effective immediately.

“I am excited to resume working with Patrick,” Rune said in a statement. “With him I have achieved some of the greatest triumphs of my career so far, and I can’t wait for us to chase the next major titles together. Moving ahead, we have had good talks on how our collaboration should unfold, and we have agreed on a strong setup that creates the best conditions for my performance.”

Rune has recently parted ways with Boris Becker, who lead him during the indoor season, and Severin Luthi, who was his head coach during the Australian Open.

Rune and Mouratoglou have history that dates back seven years

Mouratoglou coached Rune from October 2022 to August 2023, with a very short pause between Miami and Monte-Carlo last year, and helped guide Rune to a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world last summer. Mouratoglou and Rune have developed significant rapport over the years. The pair have known each other since Rune was 13, when the Dane became a “Champseeder”, a player aided by Mouratoglou’s foundation.

During Mouratoglou’s first stint as Rune’s head coach, which began in 2022, Rune quickly won his second career title at the Stockholm Open, then achieved his biggest triumph to date, when he defeated 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final.

In 2023, Mouratoglou helped guide Rune to runner-up finishes at prestigious ATP Masters 1000 events in Rome and Monte-Carlo in 2023.

Rune currently holds an ATP ranking of No 7, but possesses grand ambitions to reach the pinnacle of men’s tennis, which is why he believes it is crucial for him to find the right team to take him the rest of the way.

Rune : “In recent months I have learned a lot about what works for me”

“It is common knowledge that I am determined to win Grand Slam titles and reach that number one spot on the world ranking,” Rune said. “That requires the right coaching constellation and team surrounding me. Sometimes you must try a variety of things to find out what works – and what does not. In recent months, I have learned a lot about what works for me, and I believe Patrick is the best person to lead the team and help me achieve my goals.”

The new coaching setup will feature Mouratoglou will be the head coach, while former Danish tennis player Kenneth Carlsen will assist the team as needed. Performance analyst Mike James will continue to work with Rune.

Mouratoglou has no doubt that the rising Dane’s big ambitions can be fulfilled.
