“I like Patrick’s approach, his knowledge is indisputable, & the whole team has a super energy” – Rune looks to end year on a strong note

The 2022 season has already been a good one for Danish teenager Holger Rune. The 19-year-old began the year ranked 103 in the world and is currently ranked No 27 (he peaked at No 26 in August). He also won his first ATP singles title and reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland-Garros this season.

With still a few weeks left for the season to come to an end, Rune has added Patrick Mouratolgou, someone whom he has been associated with since his early teenage days, to his coaching team and says is looking forward to ending the year on a strong note.

Rune, who has openly declared his ambitions to become the world’s best player and win multiple Grand Slams, says he chose Mouratoglou, who has earlier coached Serena Williams and was working with Simona Halep before the Romanian took her break for the rest of the season, since he likes the Frenchman’s approach and the energy that his team brings to the table.

“I have seen how he works with his athletes, and I have been out on court with Patrick many times for practice when training at the academy,” Rune wrote in a blog on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) website. “I like his approach and his knowledge is indisputable, and the whole team has a super energy. I am very critical of coaches because I need to feel they want it as much as I do. It’s not just a job – it’s everything, and Patrick has the personality and quality to be 100 per cent in the moment.”

“I am really looking forward to finishing the year strongly in this great environment!! – Rune

Rune confirmed that Mouratoglou will be working alongside his long-time coach Lars, his mother Aneke Rune and Mike James, a performance analyst from the Mouratoglou academy, as they set out to go to the next level.

“We will be travelling to tournaments with Patrick for the first time and already we are having fun on and off court. We also have Mike James, a performance analyst from the academy, so together with Lars and my mother, Aneke, there are five of us,” Rune said. “The challenging atmosphere of being around the absolute best in the field and the most dedicated people in the business is simply next level. This vibe is so intense in the coolest way possible, and I am really looking forward to finishing the year strongly in this great environment!”
