Frenchman Halys ends Thiem run to reach first ever ATP semi-final in Estoril

Frenchman Quentin Halys ended the encouraging run of Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-1, 6-4 as he reached the semi-finals of the Estoril Open at Clube de Ténis do Estoril on Friday evening.

Halys, ranked No 80, will play the winner of the match between Norwegian Casper Ruud, the top seed, and Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 5 seed, next.

In the previous rounds, the Frenchman won against Portuguese Nuno Borges (6-3, 6-4) and Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 4 seed (7-6 (5), 7-5).

Thiem, ranked No 111, edged out qualifier Sebastian Ofner (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and won against American Ben Shelton, the No 8 seed (6-2, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
