Federer provides assistance towards education for Ukrainian children through his Foundation
Federer, who is continuing to work towards a comeback later this year, announced that his Foundation will make a donation of $500,000 towards the cause
20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has announced that his charity foundation will support continued schooling for Ukrainian children through a donation of $500,000.
The 40-year-old Swiss player made the announcement on social media on Friday, saying that he and his family were horrified to see the pictures emerging out of Ukraine, and that he stands for peace.
The Roger Federer Foundation’s mission is to “give children the best start on their educational path through life by establishing and further develop existing early educational services in a sustainable way”.
The progress I make every day strengthens my belief that I will be healthy and strong enough to return to the tennis court at the highest level.
Federer, who is currently ranked 27th in the world, has not played since last year’s Wimbledon where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-final. Following that loss, he underwent a third surgical procedure on his right knee. The Swiss said he has only recently started hitting again and that he expects to return to the tour in late summer/ early autumn this year.
In the foreword to the Roger Federer Foundation annual report which was recently released, Federer wrote that he believes he will be healthy and strong enough to return to compete at the highest level.
“After many months of battling injury, my return to the tour in March, after my first operation, highlighted and energized me to continue my tennis career. I’m grateful for every minute I was able to spend with my fans and tennis family on court. My experience in Doha illustrated to me that my journey as an elite athlete isn’t over yet. The progress I make every day strengthens my belief that I will be healthy and strong enough to return to the tennis court at the highest level.”
