Yuan advances to make it four Chinese women in third round for first time

Chinese qualifier Yue Yuan advanced to the third round of the US Open by winning against Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 7-6 (6) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Thursday.

Yuan, ranked No 142, will face American Jessica Pegula, the No 8 seed, next. She’s one of four Chinese women to reach the third round – the first time that’s ever happened at the US Open or any Grand Slam event.

In the previous round of the Flushing Meadows, the Chinese defeated Australian wildcard Jaimee Fourlis (6-3, 6-2). Begu, ranked No 42, won against Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 32 seed (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the first round of the Flushing Meadows.
