Wimbledon: Fritz beats Davidovich Fokina to return to fourth round

Taylor Fritz, the No 5 seed, won against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 26 seed, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1 to reach the last 16 of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

The American looked to be in some physical discomfort as he struggled with both foot and elbow injuries before coming through in four sets to return to the last 16 for the third time in his career.

These were most likely niggles that arose from the exertions of his two five-set matches in the first and second rounds – on top of the fact that he came straight to SW19 off the back of a run to the title in Eastbourne.

Nevertheless, he was able to come through those physical issues and seal a commanding win to keep his hopes of a maiden Grand Slam title on track.

Fritz, ranked No 5, will play the winner of the match between Italian Luciano Darderi and Australian Jordan Thompson next.

In the previous rounds of The Championships, the American came back against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (6-7 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-4) and beat Canadian Gabriel Diallo (3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3).

Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 27, won against American Brandon Holt (6-2, 6-4, 7-5) and edged out Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) earlier in the tournament.
