Wimbledon: After having high expectations, Zverev stunned by tricky Rinderknech
Arthur Rinderknech beat Alexander Zverev 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 on Tuesday evening and will play Chilean lucky loser Cristian Garin in the next round

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech beat German Alexander Zverev, the No 3 seed, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to advance to the second round of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday evening.
The result is Rinderknech’s first-ever top five victory and the German’s first opening-round defeat at a Grand Slam since 2019 at the grass-court Grand Slam.
13 of the 32 men’s seeds at Wimbledon have now fallen after just the first round – with Zverev the biggest casualty.
A 24-hour battle
The clash was split over two days, with the first two sets being played on Monday night – before the 23:00 curfew was put in place.
Rinderknech had a prime opportunity to take a stranglehold of the match, holding two set points in the second-set tiebreak, including one on his serve.
However, it was the more experienced Zverev who claimed the second set and – seemingly – swung the odds back in his favour.
When the players resumed on Tuesday, however, it seemed as if Rinderknech hadn’t stepped off Centre Court for a single minute, breaking early in the second set before serving out the third set with ease.
The fourth set followed a similar pattern to the initial two, with a tight tiebreaker going the way of Zverev after the Frenchman failed to capitalise on a minibreak – the German launching down a 136mph second serve at 5-5.
In the fifth, the world No 3 reverted back to more passive play, with the bolder Rinderknech breaking early and completing the upset with a cross-court backhand winner, falling to the ground in celebration – and relief.
“I’m super happy, thank you to the crowd for supporting me, I still get goosebumps! This sport is so tough, there was a lot of emotion on the court today,” the victor stated.
Rinderknech, ranked No 72, will play Chilean lucky loser Cristian Garin next.
