As former world No 1 Garbine Muguruza took to the court in Adelaide against fellow former Grand Slam winner Bianca Andreescu, the Spaniard was hoping to reverse the slide that saw her drop from No 3 to No 55 in the rankings over the course of the 2022 season.

Muguruza certainly looked like she was headed to the second round of the 2023 WTA Adelaide International 1 as she got off to a quick start and soon built a 6-0, 5-2 lead against the Canadian, a former world No 4 who is now ranked 46th in the world after her own struggles over the past two seasons.

But Andreescu, known for her grit and perseverance, produced a remarkable comeback to win the second set in a tiebreak and then win the match 0-6, 7-6(3), 6-1 in two hours and 12 minutes.

The win kept Andresscu’s perfect record over Muguruza intact, with the Canadian now 3-0 lifetime against the Spanish woman.

Andreescu will next meet either fourth seeded Veronika Kudermetova or American Amanda Anisimova in the second round.

Also on the first day of the WTA 500 event, former top 15 player Kaia Kanepi came from a set down to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Czech teen Linda Noskova, top seed Anahelina Kalinina, and Americans Shelby Rogers and Clare Liu who won their matches to come through the qualifying draw.
