Danielle Collins took a brief time-out during her match against Jaqueline Cristian in Madrid to scold a spectator who kept heckling.

Having lost the first set, the American was about to serve at deuce, with the score at 1-1 in the second, when she was interrupted.

Turning to face the stands, she snapped: “You come out here and play, and you do what I do, OK? Have a little more respect.”

She was met with a big round of applause from the rest of the crowd – and she went on to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

It had echoes of Novak Djokovic telling a fan at the Australian Open in 2024 to “come and say it to my face“, and several incidents involving Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon in 2022.

The 13th seed now faces second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16.
