Madrid Open: Rybakina beats Andreescu to reach third round

Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 10 seed, advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open by winning against Canadian Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 6-2 at the Caja Mágica on Friday evening.

This was the third win for Rybakina over Andreescu in as many matches, with all of those coming in straight sets.

“First matches are always tough, and against Bianca it’s always difficult,” Rybakina said during her on-court interview. “Super happy that I managed to win. Still not at my best, of course, first match on clay, but super happy to be back and excited for the next match.”

Rybakina, ranked No 11 and a former Wimbledon champion, will play Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 17 seed, next. The pair have played five times with the Kazakh leading 3-2 in the head-to-head (1-1 on clay).

In the previous round of the tournament, Andreescu, ranked No 132, beat American McCartney Kessler (6-2, 6-4). This was the Canadian’s second event since October. She returned in Rouen earlier this month and lost in the first round.
