It’s the kind of little scene that doesn’t go unnoticed. After his victory over Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals of the Miami Masters 1000, Grigor Dimitrov bumped into Serena Williams just outside the stadium court. The two chatted for long minutes before embracing.

Although there had been rumours of an affair between the two in the past, the Bulgarian insisted on their strong friendship at the press conference.

“She’s amazing,” Dimitrov said. “We stay in touch. We nearly speak on a daily basis. She said, I’m gonna come watch. I was, like, Okay. It’s always very humbling to have such a supporter in your corner, and I think just before the match she came, we had a little chat.

“Actually, I remember she was even here when I had my first top-10 win. It was a very nice moment. I think we both remember that.”

“It’s friendship, man. I think this is the best part. Tennis is tennis, but, you know, we are all living our dream right now. I think the real life begins after, and I think we have managed to be such good and close friends after so many years.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, who retired after the US Open 2022, also spoke to the winner of the other semi-final, Jannik Sinner, praising his forehand skills: “You deserved to be in the final. I would have loved to have had your forehand, the racquet speed, the power. I was like, wow.”

Speaking to Italian journalists, the 22-year-old recalled the moment: “I’d never spoken to her before, so it was special to be able to exchange a few words with her. Also because when I arrived on the circuit, she was already almost finishing, so there hadn’t been many opportunities to see her. I was happy to talk to her, just a few words, I asked her how the family was – they’re doing well, and that’s the most important thing.”
