Britain’s Emma Raducanu reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time on Monday as she beat American Amanda Anisimova, the No 17 seed, 6-1, 6-3 at the Miami Open.

The former US Open champion returned strongly and moved well throughout, while Anisimova appeared to be struggling with a physical issue.

“It can be really difficult when your opponent is making loads of errors and then suddenly blasting winners,” Raducanu told Sky Sports. “I’m really proud of how I came through that. Amanda is a great player, she’s won a WTA 1000 this year, so I hope her wrist or something is OK.”

“I’ve come a long way in a week”

Raducanu lost in the first round in Indian Wells, after which she parted ways with Vladimir Patenek, and said she was feeling much happier on and off the court now.

“I’ve come a long way in the last week,” she said. In Indian Wells I was not necessarily feeling great about my tennis. This week I have some really good people around me, we have fun off the court too.”

Raducanu, ranked No 60, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 23 seed, and American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, next.

Emma Raducanu beat Japanese wildcard Sayaka Ishii (6-2, 6-1), American Emma Navarro, the No 8 seed (7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-6 (3)) and American McCartney Kessler (6-1, 3-0 ret.) earlier in the tournament.

In the previous rounds of the Miami tournament, Anisimova, ranked No 17, won against Egyptian Mayar Sherif (6-2, 6-2) and Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 11 seed (7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3).
